A Compromising Position

Spec & Synopsis

Date: 2007

Format: Back to back 16mm film installation
Duration: 2 x 1 minute looped (silent)

A site-specific film installation showing a young woman tied to a train track. On one side, she desperately struggles to free herself from the ropes before the train comes. But the loop is endless, the train never arrives, no one saves her and she never escapes, silently stuck forever in an homage to modes of cinematic representation.

On the other side, the same woman is resigned to her fate, draped on the tracks, again stuck within a neverending loop that serves to create a filmic portrait reminiscent of classical painting. The work addresses constructs of femininity and gender relations throughout time and media using humour, sexuality, repetition and melancholy as tools.
