Biography

Artist Statement

b. 1978 Edinburgh, Scotland

Since 2002, Katri has been living between Mexico City and Glasgow, Scotland where she graduated from the Master of Fine Art programme at Glasgow School of Art in 2007.

She works predominantly with video installation and has exhibited in group shows and had her work screened throughout the U.K, in Mexico, Australia, Iceland, The Netherlands, Venezuela, Estonia, Italy, Germany, Sweden and the U.S.A.

Recent projects include an international group video show, Cine de Barrio, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, curated by Paco Barragán in March 2010 and the Salon Video Art Prize at Matt Roberts Arts in London, also in March. In November 2009 Katri was one of four artists in My Wicked Twisted Sense of Love, curated by Lesley Moody Castro at Women and and their Work Gallery in Austin, Texas and in September 2009 she had a solo exhibition Sometimes it makes me wonder what I fought for at +44 141 Gallery in Glasgow. In January 2009 she completed a studio residency with exhibition at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts [PICA] in Western Australia.

Katri is currently working on a CCA Walls of Light Moving Image Commission which will be screened across the UK from October 2010 onwards as part of the handover celebrations of the Commonwealth Games from Delhi to Glasgow. She is also developing a new body of video work for a solo exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen, Scotland in March 2011 and in June 2011, she will exhibit alongside Stina Wirfelt and Raquel Mendez in a 3-person video show at Galería Arte talCual in Mexico City.

I have an interest-led project-based art practice and work predominantly with the moving image. Subject matters within my work vary widely but the common thread throughout is always the desire to explore new modes of reflection in a world in which reality is never a static given, but a complex set of relations.

New work often starts life as a chance encounter with a person or place which I then build on and develop over time. I imbue my work with both playful and meaningful contradictions, always trying to maintain the awareness that everything contains its opposite. I look to capture the nuances between the ordinary and the extraordinary in the everyday, actively turning one into the other and vice-versa, be they embedded in passing moments, individuals or whole communities.

I find value in the overlooked and turn that into an emotive experience for an audience. My video installations are influenced by documentary filmmaking and portraiture while they simultaneously challenge each of these genres to create intimate, accessible work that can be understood and appreciated on a universal level.
